Horwitz created the word "Sonakinatography" referring to the process of representing sound and/or movement as visual notation. Her structured process is drawn as a graph but it can be read as musical notes or movement. The use of color adds a level of visual complexity. It is through the means of a logical progression that results in a composition of visual delight.

The process is structured in movements of as little as four to sixteen steps though many of her compositions use a count of eight. Each step or count is assigned a color or chromatic value to create a wheel. The colors are layed down in a logical progression that is predetermined once the initial count and color selection (1 - 8) is arranged. The composition is completed once every permutation has been realized - it may take as long as one year to complete a composition.

The system is not an end in itself, only the initial product of her artistic endeavor.

"I experience freedom through limitation and structure.  It would appear that limitation and structure are dichotomies to freedom, but through experience, I have found them to be synonymous and the basis for freedom.  I limit my choice / freedom by selecting the minimum number of colors to work with.   My art, much like my life, is not solely based on chance, but by my desires and limitations, both conscious and unconscious.

The cycle of life is runs in a circular movement... always one step from beginning to end."
